Almost five years ago, the local Rotary in my small hometown of Virginia, MN invited me to speak about my Peace Corps experience. I introduced them to my friend and colleague in Zambia, Masauso Mwale, and informed them that he wanted to pursue a college education. The members of this Rotary club became interested in Mr. Masauso's dream and interested in helping improve food supply and general agriculture in Zambia. What better way to do so than to help fund Mr. Mwale's education. Sustainable: help train a Zambian to better train his people. Not only did this club help fund Masauso's education (they raised money to pay for it in full), but also offered support and encouragement in other ways as he worked his way to his Bachelor's degree.
This hard-working man would not have gotten the opportunity to pursue his dream if not for the support of this small club. (Many people of Zambia cannot even dream of a
secondary education with its fees and mandatory uniforms.) I am so proud of him.
A wise woman once told me, "If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it." Thank you, movers and shakers of the Quad Cities Rotary Club. You have changed lives here. Zambia will benefit.
